Things I absolutely hate.....

Help Support CattleToday:

I'll be honest, I pay everything via invoice or manual means just because I can occasionally forget an account and I've had my head scrambled too many times between bull riding, fighting, and my old job.

What is it about taking something or an incident going south or turning out bad or dangerous then making a funny out of it?
Probably has something to do with being born a Harp. Those who are not will never understand and thank God, we can't explain it!

Not much to hate on nowadays, outside of politics, socialism, people that don't want to work but want good paying easy jobs, but my (very) trivial rant for the week follows...
Being still new to the area and still trying to navigate our way around the culinary landscape here, we have been trying a lot of different local restaurants, eateries, lunch counters, canteens, cafes and beaneries. I was surprised at the number of small Korean, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and other Asian venues but I'm rather fond of good Asian food anyway, so when last Friday's mail brought a flyer for The Hot Wok, we decided to try it that evening. A nice 2 sided flyer, with a big menu and good prices, proudly proclaiming "Dine In or Take Out" and "We Deliver".

Bear with me, as I will eventually segue into the object of my real dismay......
So we get dressed to go eat, drive the couple miles to the place, walk in and notice right away there's no one eating in the place and the chairs are all stacked on the tables. Disappointment #1. No dining in. Take out only, but about the time we were leaving, a carryout customer told us, in typical Central Texas drawl "There's 'nother Chinese place right up the road in the Center called B&J's Chinese and you can sit down to eat in there" so we backtracked about 1/2 mile and pulled into the strip mall known as Cove Terrace Center. I quickly realized she meant Beijing's Chinese, so we went in to eat. Pretty big place and I could tell in it's heyday was probably very nice but it was showing it's age. Chinese lanterns hung about, 2 huge aquariums that no longer had either water or fish in them, & the main menu entrees were pictured up over the counter in laminated cardboard that had turned yellow with age. Not exactly high dining but good enough for 2 country folks moved to town.
The place was a bit dark and we were the only customers in the place but it was not bad, for food brought to your table already in a Styrofoam take out box... I ordered my favorite. General Tso's Chicken. (There was a real Chinese general by that name but he is not known to have invented or even have eaten this chicken dish, but is known for brutally killing millions of people). Wife ordered Schezwan beef and the only worker I actually saw asked what we wanted to drink. 2 teas, where upon she reached into a refrigerator, brought out two tall covered styrofoam cups with tea in them. Cold but not ice cold and I soon learned why. Piled up in the container with plenty of sauce and a big styrofoam cup of fried rice. In mine, each corner of the container there was one raw broccoli floret, and interspersed among the chicken nuggets were those skinny long roasted Asian pods of pepper. I knew from past experience, that they registered somewhere between a habanero and molten Sulphur so I moved those off to the side with my genuine Made in China plastic fork. (got to keep things authentic I suppose) . As we began to eat, the girl came over and asked if we wanted ice, for our tea. (Brought it in 2 more tall disposable glasses and we were all set.
Still, both wife's and my food was quite spicy hot. Much more so than most Mexican food I get. The food was good, (again, very spicy) and we each ate about 1/2 of it, folded the tops down on our fancy styro 'plates and took them home for the next day.

As we walked out, it was still daylight, maybe around 7:30, my throat and lips were burning, I thought I saw a wisp of smoke coming from my wife's nostrils, but looking about 200' away in the same parking lot, I spied another place that had a big sign next to the entry door stating Fries Malts Shakes. Now, being diabetic, I'm not supposed to partake of such sugary confections but the situation called for an exception. I'll not mention the name of the place but the last part said 'Etc' and the first part rhymed with Flies (but had an 'r' in it.) A burger joint that specialized in a particular side order, with many variations of shape and flavor on that side.
About a dozen tables, one guy at the counter waiting on a go order and one rather openly amorous young couple at a table in the far back corner. ( I thought quietly: "Coitus is in their near future, probably before we get back home.") On the wall between the counter and the kitchen, another sign, a carton of Blue Bell ice cream again with the words "Shakes Malts Floats".

About that time, a 25ish looking young employee comes out, hands waiting guy his order and asks "What will it be for yall?".
I say "I want a large strawberry malt" and before wife can tell him what she wanted, he uttered "We're not allowed to make malts".

It was the equivalent of "Don't forget to drink your Ovaltine" coupled with "You're gonna shoot your eye out kid!"

I bluntly asked "Why not?"

"Well, we're kinda busy".

I, am not a stranger to making malts. I have for many years had an old malt maker and have probably made hundreds of them over the years. 3 scoops of ice cream, 2 cups of COLD milk and 2 tablespoons of Carnation malt powder, 30 seconds on the mixer and it's done.

malt2.jpg
I look toward the seating area, see the lovers getting up to leave, still wrapped around each other and asked the counter guy "Doing what?" Then "never mind, you are on The List. Dairy Queen's right down the road and we won't darken your doors again. "

'kinda busy?"
That's IT???
With us 2 being the only ones in the place?

The guy just didn't want to go to the trouble..
I hate lazy people.

I hate lazy people.
Two spots come to mind in cove.
Lil tex cafe down town especially for breakfast.
Giovanni's in cove or lampasas. Veal parmesan recommended. I can't remember her name but his (owners) Kevin iirc. You see the guy with a hook for a hand that's him.

We went south today to check on some stuff. My son and I went in to a Cafe we really enjoy about 130, after the lunch rush.

The guy at the table beside us was watching a video the whole time while he ate. It was annoying. I kept hoping they would tell him some thing but did not.

I've been places that have signs that say to take phone calls outside.

We've been in both. Lil Tex many times, Giovanni's once (in Cove). Lil Tex is just good plain food, all the time. I've never had a bad meal there, no matter time or day or how busy they were. It may get a little dirty at lunch rush but the food is always good.
Maybe Giovannis was off the day we went but it was nothing special to me considering their price structure and the time it took to get served. Bella Sera tho was really good and just a little better overall 'experience'.
There's a place out at Kempner I've been wanting to go to but haven't made it yet.

(Wife likes some place called McAlliisters but to me, it's all new age hippie stuff. Evidently, their iced tea is supposed to be a big draw there but I just don't see it. I had a BLT there and when I eat a traditional sandwich, I want it to taste like it. They had so much crap on it I would have never guessed it was a blt. Some kind of nasty sauce instead of mayonnaise.)

A sign of the times. At the place in my life going out to eat is for more than just a quick meal and back to work or home. I want to sit back and enjoy the meal and not watch/hear some yahoo fiddling with his/her 'device..
Life's short and I'm tryin to smell the roses..

Brick oven is the place in Kempner. Been there forever. My dil worked there for a while. Worth going to for sure. You can get two things there . Schnitzel and more schnitzel.

Speaking of Texas and things I hate..... Fire ants.
Feral hogs. within about 2 years they took over the entire ranch. 35 hog sounders and each sow with piglets.
Yankees and Californians that flooded into Texas and took over like fire ants.

Fortunately we moved to rural Oregon. Lush, green, country conservative people, no fire ants or hogs but instead bears and mountain lions. Oh, and now they have brought in and are protecting wolves. SSS

Arrogant bicylists in painted on britches peddling their feet off to give their azz a ride. Hogging the lane on windy roads so you can't pass them. I have actually gone out at night, sawed down the Share the Road signs and used the posts for agriculture

I mean at least the Yankees had some fight to em, and the breakfast tacos they'd work. These damn California's won't do either. I wished we'd get another wave of good ol stupid and obnoxious Yankees to come through and stink the place up hoping maybe it'll drive the Californians to Oklahoma or Arkansas. They won't go to Louisiana we've tried. Apparently even Californians got sense enough to not live in a hole by the ocean... . ... ...........

Yes many true yankees are hard workers. I am talking about NYC, NE urban and Washington DC yankees.
Oh the Californians have invaded Oregon too. The further north you go the crazier it gets. Now 8 hour workday a according to temperature and high minimum wage protects the Breakfast Tacos. Portland is a no go zone. One thing about it though, they sure protect nature. Urban boundry laws- No urban sprawl onto the farmland. The suburbs just stop like a wall.

Thay are all moving to GA. Damn RINOs in the capital the last 20 years, have been whoring after the movie industry, zero taxes, grants etc...to get them to come to Ga. And boy, have they!! Cobb County and Gwinnett County... solid GOP strongholds in the 1990s, where there was never a Democrat even qualify to run for office... has voted solid blue from WH to dogcatcher, since 2016. The RINOs that gave away the store to get Hollywood here were all voted out by the new Dem voters from California.

Mcalister's - the only place I've ever been where the salad was ruined to the point of green mush. When I ponted this out, the waitress gave me a puzzled look like she was clueless. I was on a clock in those days, so I chalked it up to lessons learned and took my tea with me. Good tea but the food pretty much sucked. Never any real consistency in the quality of a meal. It was conveniently located across from the hospital where I worked. It finally closed.

Here in eastern Oregon we have travel rules. Don't go west of Pendleton or east of Ontario. You can go north or south all you want but there is not much for roads and a long ways to anything in either of those directions.

The Texas Cafe in Bastrop Texas. Great country food, waitresses are like family. The dirt under the tables is actual dry cow manure.
I don't understand.
Which is it that you absolutely hate?
Texas cafes? country food? the waitresses? family? or dry cow manure?
:)

None of the above, I love all those things. I thought the discussion had steered towards what we like concerning Texas restaurant food.
