    Scrotal Hernia

We had a bull with a inguinal hernia. We bred with him a couple years after first diagnosed and he got the cows bred no problems. We sold him as it got bigger but were warned before breeding with him that one day he could be fine and could be dead the next as it progressed. Surgery was an...

    How early for C- section?

I wait until as she starts to stop eating and going down hill before I would do anything to try and get her as close to term as possible. I'd agree on the 3-4 week range. You can do an emergency csection yourself . Good luck

    Brisket tags?

We bought a group of cowsd that had them. They don't come out and fairly easy to see. Like ear tags better because if you can see head you can see number like when sorting a group. I could see using it as more of a back up to put in thm in case ear tags fall out.

City guy wants to fight again!!

I wouldnt mind seeing breeders use it (i know alot f them and me spend alot on other stuff that wouldn't have as big of return) if its as accurate as described seems like a useful thing to test for. 15% on 20 cows would be 3 calves born 21 days earlier would be 63 days of increased weight on...

    Castrate or Not?

Agree completely with this. It may not always make money sense in the short term, but you our your area gain a reputation from the product they sell and their managment practices in general wether for good or bad.

    Year Round Calving...

I think either works depending on your setup and the work you want to do. If you use calving ease bulls and let the cows take care of themselves for the most part year round calving isnt a bad deal. If something goes wrong it is harder to catch because you are calving year round but you do get...

    Dumping first calf heifer calves

Weaning at 2 weeks is and getting $400 is loosing out on 1/2 of the calf value that that heifer should be providing you to cover her cost/inputs if she were to carry the calf until normal weaning times. We sometimes wean a couple weeks early based on pasture conditions to let them recover but...

    Surrounded by Trich infected herds

FYI their is a vaccine that I looked at since we seem to have the neighbors bulls in with our cows as much as theres. Dont think its cheap though. http://www.jefferspet.com/products/trichguard-v5l

    Aged Bull and cow Fertility

Cows for us seems like 12-13 they start coming up open more frequently. Usually we start noticing they aren't raising as good of calf and holding body condition before/in conjunction with fertility issues starting. Bulls usually flip at 6 or 7. do have one little guys that we use on heifers...

    Pregnant or not?

If she was a good size/condition and age when exposed to bull I would butcher her. She would be 110 days plus into bull exposure and still doesnt look close. Usually like heifers bred in first 45 to 60 days of breeding season anything over that seems like it has a tough time rebreeding.

    Cleanup bull

We wait 24 hours after last cow is AI'd. I had read that their is a less than 2% chance at that point that the cleanup bull would mess up your AI work. We are commercial so the main thing we worry about is getting them bred.

    Selling young bred heifers

I had thought about it and then keeping the heifer or after calving fattening her out. If they fell during either my spring or fall calving season I do it since Id be keeping a close eye on them anyway but they dont line up with anything and wouldnt be able to check them as close. THanks for...

    Selling young bred heifers

Recently had bought a group of replacement heifers and had the vet give them a pelvic exam and 2 of them came back as 5-6 months bred. These heifers are around 13 months old and probably weigh 825. I talked to the breeder I had bought them from and he was very good and said to sell them and...

    Newbie Help

They should be coming any day now we turn in 4th of July and have been having the early ones born since the first week in april. Depending on when you calved last year they may be a little later. If I wasn't seeing springing by now and they had calved at the same time last year I would...

    Bovine Ecolizer+C20

I have used antibodies for e. Coli and clostridium c. They only give about 3 weeks protection but work pretty quickly and seemed to help. The ecoli was bo bac 2x and the clos. was by colorado vaccines I think. Dont know if you'll be able to find the clos. i know their was a shortage for awhile.

    Expected or acceptable losses

If you have a large enough heard it is tough to halve 100% calf crop before you even start calving you have a few percent open cows that didn't breed and a 1% abort. Also if you have a cow die with a calf in her that knocks you again. So before a calf even hits the ground your starting at...

    EPDs

Good question, I think it initially comes from some combination of sires/ grandsires (possibly brothers) for a baseline. Alot of times on yearling bulls you see a P or I denoted by those epds and a really low accuracy show not much practical info is available. Curious to see if somebody knows...

    EPDs

    1. Agree with lucky they mostly change every year. If zero were average and say you have a bull with below average weaning weight it would probably look bad saying this bulls progeny are a negative number and loosing this many pounds. 2. Not sure according to ABS nursing ratio is the same as...

    Epinephrine pulling calves.

Not a problem. I had had been told to give that or dex if i had a sluggish calf that i pulled and thought might have fluid in its lungs or not be getting enough oxygen. I will pass that on.
