    Grass Fed Flavor

I did not read all of the replies. I had my first certified grass fed hamburger in August. Gag. It was at a 4-star restaurant where my son was a chef. It had a gamey funky taste and odor, and I could not eat it. I saw the boxes that it was shipped in, Texas beef. The restaurant would cut...

    Buying Kill/slaughter cows

You might want to talk to the plants that you want to sell to. They will tell you their requirements and such. It is best to get the information straight from the people that you will be doing business with.

    Braunvieh twins

Our daughter's Braunvieh cow had twin heifers this week. We finally bred her to a Braunvieh bull and were surprised to get two. The cow popped both out easily and their birth weights were 65 and 60 lbs. Everyone is pleased as punch with them. They will be registered and will darken with age.

    Need help with identification

Chances are they are Angus x Jersey crosses. In the first photo, the calf looking at you has a Jersey shaped head. We have bred our Jersey cows to Angus and the calves looked like yours. If they are still intact (bull calves), now would be a good time to band or cut them. They look like they...

    How Many are BQA Certified?

I am not BQA certified. I believe that it is a good thing, especially if one plans on marketing locker beef. This link is to all of the workshops sponsored by the animal science dept at TX A&M. There are several Beef related. http://animalscience.tamu.edu/workshops/

    Questions about Branding

I don't think that the tscrabrands website is very accurate. I looked up 3 brands including the Four Sixes "6666" in King County where the ranch is and the website could not find a match. and John SD I did mention researching her brand before having it made.

    Questions about Branding

John SD, LauraleesFarm lives in Texas. LauraleesFarm, I would contact the brand manufacturer as to their recommendations. After all, they will be the one to make the iron. How are you going to heat the brands? Or are you looking for an electric iron? One suggestion for sure is to make a...

    Questions about Branding

I second http://www.lhbrandingirons.com/ You can call them and talk about what you need. Really nice folks. You can send them your drawing and they will tell you if it is feasible for a hot brand or freeze brand. Design can be tricky because narrow spaces will burn out or merge. Also, you...

Would You Cull Any of These?

looks like they are doing a good job. The gestation period for cattle is a little over 9 months.

Should I buy the whole herd?

I would draw blood for a pregnancy test on the ones that I would be interested in. If I were to buy them, I would offer market price (slaughter price per pound). It may have been the bull's fault that they didn't calve, but there is always the possibility that he gave them a uterine infection...

    Feed Question

Does he raise all of the grain he uses? I wanted to add... years ago a friend bought feed like this. Turned out the corn the guy used included the cobs. The bargain price was not such a bargain in the end.

    Cattle behavior :)

Please doo not let her get close to your face. Cows see differently than people and she can see something, swing her head and hit you smack dab in the face. Even at 40 inches tall, she will weigh quite a bit. Many mature cows will weigh well over 600 lbs. Teach her to stand tied. It is one of...

    Cattle behavior :)

Have you taught her to stand tied? That will help with her leading. And I agree with Fire Sweep. Do not let her get away from you. It only teaches her that she is stronger than you and will create problems in the long run. Don't feel bad about snatching her hard when she tries to take off...

    metal eartag?

After the mad cow disease ruckus (Holstein cattle), all dairy cattle are required to have an ID tag whether it is a male or female. We used the USDA free tag when we get a bull calf born that we plan to sell. Leave it in.

    Bottle Calf Building

ditto about the dividers when feeding them. My BIL has a dairy. His calf pen is fairly large probably about 40' x 60'. One side is under a barn and it has little stalls that the calves stand in to eat. When we have bottle calves (usually no more than 2 at a time), they have a 20 x 36 pen...

    Cattle size question...

One thought about Longhorns. Are you set up to handle cattle with ginormous horns? Now don't get me wrong. I like Longhorns, but you will need to get a prepotent bull to overcome the LH traits or find cows that are not hatchet assed. I have read that the best LH cross is a Charolais bull on...
