I asked an old cattle man that in Tx that question and his answer was "Don't ever ask a rancher how much land he owns or how many head of cattle he had". Then he asked me how much money I had and what was my net worth. He said to ask a cattle man those questions were the same ask asking you your net worth. I have never asked that questin again.BTW that was 20 years ago.

I get that from time to time and have for years. I was taught the same as you have said. They don't mean no harm for the most part. I always tell them "too many".

It seems to satisfy them.
