    warts on cows

If it is a nutrition problem why would one out of 5-10 get them when they are all on the same feed plan (grass). Does anyone see them following a family line? The mother had them, the daughter had them, granddaughter has them on down the line? I haven't tried to record this but am thinking a...

    tranquilizing before slaughter

At times like these you need to know an onsite butcher. Someone that will come to your place. Then drop her in the field with the 30-30. She never knows she was going to get excited.

    Drawing Meds

I leave the drawing needle in the bottle and swap the syringe. This keeps contamination to a minimum and allows the bottle to equalize and encourages me to go ahead and swap the administering needles instead of "well I'll swap after the next one" or "just one more" syndrome. One benefit I've...

    Grass fed vs grain fed

Have you spoken to any of the butchers yet? I think you will find most all of them "dry age". How long do you want it to hang for? Isn't it tough to get a grass fed carcass with enough fat to hang long? Maybe turn it around and grain those oreos and let the longhorn do what it does best, convert...

    water in winter?

If you can't pump it you may have to haul it from some other place? A neighbor used a 400 gal tank in a pickup bed trailer and could haul enough to last for the day. Because the cows drank most of it the ice build up wasn't terrible. But as cold as it was freezing might be a problem, if you have...

How do you get the string off?

I stick the bale spike in about 2 inchs from the edge and lift. Generally breaks up enough to get them. But have had them froze enough to "peel" about 3 inchs off, kinda like peeling an orange?
