    Anybody else seeing rain rot?

I guess that's what it is I'm only seeing it in the baby calves three weeks or younger. Not really feasible for us to put them up somewhere dry. Hoping for sunshine but it looks like another round of rain coming.

    First heifer to calve

While I was making a post on the feed yard board just 30 min ago, I heard that bellering coming from the lot where the heifers are, you know that sound so I had to check and see. This is how I like them to come, no waiting, watching and worry. First of 9 heifers bred to right answer had a 60...

    Shipping from southeast

The thread on breeds board got me wanting to post about something I've been studying for awhile. Has anyone run the numbers on shipping preconditioned calve from say Tennessee to some of the better markets say OKC, Joplin or elsewhere. I can't seem to get a grasp on what size, age, time of year...

    Fescue stockpile guys....need advice

Ok here's the deal. I have an adjoining farm I lease but we have to get the cattle out sept thru mid jan. (deer hunting). So cattle are off it now. My plan was to start grazing it in early to mid march to save hay. We're talking pretty intensive 50 pairs on 70-80 acres no fertilizer. This place...

    Mud shot

I think the calves are looking pretty good considering they haven't laid down on dry ground many days of their lives. Cows are holding up pretty good with crappy hay but I give them about 4# of 14% every 2 or 3 days.

    Weaned calf pictures

Sorry Im not very good at taking pictures. Some of yall need to enter photo contests. But These were weaned October 6th. We will feed them until late November and sell as weaned/ vac'd. Some years it pays, and some years not really worth the trouble. This year with the weather changes being so...

Lost a good one this morning

Lost a one month old bull calf out of my best registered cow. Took him to Kord clinic and they called back this afternoon said he had a ruptured intestine due to grass/milk being packed in. There was no foreign objects they said. Said they are going to check for possible bacterias that may have...

    Cow slobbering ....tongue problem?

Noticed this cow staying to herself this morning. She was slobbering and kept extending her neck like they do sometimes when they eat hedge apples . She was around some bodock trees so I just shrugged it off. But went back before dark and she was still staying by her self but she came up to...

Second AI calf on the ground

The first was a registered angus bull by MAR Innovation. He weighed 78 pounds and came 12 days early. I forgot to get a picture before turning them out and she's had him hid out. Here is the second calf, a big heifer by Musgrave Big Sky out of a registered Charlois cow. Did not get a weight...

    Which implant?

I'm only familiar with ralgro , so now that its not available, could anyone recommend another brand that gives good results? I would like to use the same product on steers and heifers (feeders). I usually give ralgro at 2-3 months of age, I don't know if all brands are the same. Thanks.

    Fall calving started

This is the second calf so far by one of our home raised bulls. Last breeding season we really didn't have a sure fire heifer bull. The one we used had a ced 2 and bw +2.8. I'm happy so far these first two calves appear to be 60# or less. AI calves should start later this week (aviator...

    Preg check

Well we checked 23 today and only had one open , an old cow soon to be shipped. 16 of the 23 had been timed AI'd and it looks like only 10 of the 16 took on AI. Cleanup bull got the rest under 60 days. Had 10 others that I didn't check because I had either seen them bred by the bull or they were...

    840 EID

Being I've never used EID tags, I'm asking how would it benefit me to start. We have a premises Id number already. We right now sell about 60 feeder calves a year And about 10 or 15 bulls and replacement heifers combined. Our goal is to be selling 2 load lots a year within 5 years. Also is...

    Connealy in focus

Need to decide fairly quickly on purchasing a bull due to my main clean up bull just tested bad and the young bull probably can't handle them all. I found a 16 month connealy in focus son I like just wondering if anybody has had any problems with soundness, fertility, etc. most calves will be...

    Preconditioning questions

How much feed per day should calves be fed during the 60 days post-weaning period to get the most return on inputs? I've fed varying amounts 5-10 pounds, always on grass and/or grass hay as well. Pretty sure I've never gotten over 2.5 ADG. This last group was fed 5# of 16% pellets and though I...

    What qualifies as an outcross?

I just randomly picked a couple of bulls advertised as "outcross". JMB Traction and HA Cowboy up. If you go back about 6 generations you will find Traveler, EXT, and Bando each 2 or 3 times in each of those bulls pedigrees.......same can be said for most of my cows and Most of the popular bulls...

    EPD's are BS

I don't know if that's true, but i got your attention. Case in point.....VAR Generation 2100, considered a high accuracy sire....right now His milk is 20 at .41 accuracy. I looked back at the spring catalogue and he was 44 at .27 accuracy. Can someone explain to me how that is even possible...
