    Torn hoof

One of our cows has a pretty good tear to her rear hoof. She’s been limping for a couple of days and today i was able to get close to her and snap a pic. No idea how this occurred. We are considering running her through the squeeze to get a better look. Depending on how deep the tear goes I was...

    Finishing steers on brewers grain

Has anyone finished steers on brewers grain? I’ve fed calves on BG for a while now but never finished them for freezer beef with it. I’ve always finished them on corn and sweat cob but am wondering if BG is ok to take them to the end? I’m wondering if the BG will give the meat a “bitter” flavor...

    Spent brewers grain safe?

I’ve got a good resource for spent brewers grain from a local brewery. I’m wondering if it is safe to feed this grain to bred beef cows in their third trimester? I’m sure it’s good feed just not sure if it is safe for cows that are bred due to the fermentation? Thanks for your input

    Finisher?

Has anyone used Nutrena Nutrebeef to finish steers for slaughter? Looking for feedback on how it did for your beef. Steers are red angus and currently on grass. We plan to transition them slowly to grain with free range hay available 24/7 Sorry for the questions on finishing but I’m trying to do...

Looking for a cow and found a bandit

Could not locate our #1 cow in the herd so we went looking for her. She is our favorite cow and is a great mom. Went to the part of the ranch #1 calved last year and found her with a brand new calf. We watched the calf stand and feed off momma for the first time. Calving season has started for...

    Finishing feed?

Im looking to finish a 1,000lbs steer. If I mixed a 50lbs bag of cracked corn and a 50lbs bag of “sweet feed” would that make a good finisher for this steer? Of course i would combine more then 100lbs total I’m just wondering if this would make a good finishing feed or not? I’ve been asked to...

Did some work on water lines this morning then rolled out the first round bale of hay. Parked the quad and ate my lunch just kinda hanging out with the girls. Nice way to spend some time.

    Shots for calves

We usually wait three months to vaccinate new born calves. This year we are running into some time frames/schedule conflicts where we either vaccinate calves early at 1-2 weeks old or not until the calves are around 6-7 months. Anyone have experience giving new calves shots at 1-2 weeks old? We...

    eye question?

We have a heifer that has an eye that is white/cloudy and runny. Not terribly bad (yet) but enough that it looks uncomfortable. Delt with pink eye in the past with a shot of LA 200 with good results and this is probably a case of that or a scratch/poke/injury issue. Question is have any of you...

Do they look fat or bloated?

This is two of our 9 month old heifer calves we put on a 10 acre pasture a couple months ago. The two have been eating a variety of very good feed (grass, wild oats, pasture mix etc). I went to check on them today and they both appreared to have some “belly” to them. I know not the best pics but...

    New Highlands bull calf

So in addition to our angus cattle we keep a couple Highlands around the ranch. They are easy keepers and really eat down just about anything. Our plan for the Highlands are to now cross the cows with an angus bull and come up with a Hangus for our consumption. Anyways we have up until recently...

    Vegetable trimmings?

    Seed to deep?

We have been clearing, dozing and planting several pastures that have not had anything done to them in 20+ years. We broadcasted a Dryland pasture mix after discing almost two months ago. We then ran a ring roller over the seed for coverage. I’m wondering if we put to much soil over the seed and...

    Quad recommendation please

It seems UTV's are the preferred choice and we may get one down the road but we are looking at getting a quad for checking fences, cows and some hunting. Looking at a quad in the 500cc range and looking for recommendations and pros and cons of the different models available today? Any input is...

    Corral panel $ question

We have a chance to pick up twelve 12' foot Powder River panels and 2 bow gates for $2000.00. All are in good condition and have the pins to connect them up. We have a Powder River squeeze but recently lost the working pen panels. (Long story) Seem like a fair price? Thanks for your responses

First steers starting to fill out

These are our first attempt to fill the freezer from our own steers. Have these guys on about 10lbs of grain and corn, free feed oat/pasture hay (round bales) and they do a little browsing on grass when they feel inclined to get up from resting under their favorite trees in their pasture. They...
