Cow prices

Help Support CattleToday:

We're not seeing those prices here.
Cows have went down since the summer.
I guess people don't have hay to get through the winter.
Calves are still selling good.
A friend bought 2 of the almost heavy breds at less than 1500. They will re-sell in December and heavy bred.
I expect they'll bring over 2000 then

Was going to sell some 5 weight calves today . Friend at livestock barn urged me to wait till November
We're holding about forty calves until November or longer if necessary.
Sale barn owners believe prices will be through the roof next spring.
5 wts brining $4/lb?
We will see.

Sounds like good advice. I've always been told not to sell calves in October if I can help it. There are always different factors that can go into it, but one of the big ones is buyers either don't buy as many, or don't pay as much for ones they do buy due to the risk of sick calves going up so much in October. Lots of folks here starting to dump calves and culls as grass is winding down and time to feed hay approaches.

That's what I've seen. Buyers paying $1600-1750 a head for steers and heifers about $200 back. Doesn't matter the size between 500 and 650 lbs they all bring about the same per head.

Bought 9 bred cows weighing an average of 1,222 pounds. If memory and paper work serves me right 5 bred 5 months and 4 bred 4 months. One 4 year old, one full mouth, the rest broken or spread mouth. The 4 year old and one of the spread mouth cows are solid red. The rest are black or black whiteface. Averaged paying $1,137.
Kill cows were down. They pounded all the 1,2,3 month bred cows. Upper 80's to low 90's.

Interesting that the Herefords sold as well as the Angus. Safe to assume the Angus were black?

My fine purchases from yesterday. None of them would win a blue ribbon at a stock show. But at $1,137 average they will make me some green to take to the bank. While I was picking them up I talked to the sale yard owner. He said bred cows were cheaper because the kill cows were down 10-15 cents. He said they had over 500 kill cows. The buyers know that so they didn't have to compete as much to get all the cows they want or need.

The baldy looks like a producer...

Kill cows are down here but came back up 3 to 5 this week.
They were only off 2 or 3 cents the day before at Vale. But a huge run of cows it becomes how many does the plant run and how many trucks do they have. Normally there is basically 3 cow kill plant represented there. I didn't see the buyer from the closet plant. The other 2 were standing beside each other just bidding on cows that fit their order.

8 more cows came to the Badly Scattered Land and Cattle Company pen. They are 5, 6, 7 months bred and averaged weighing 1,332. They cost an average of $1,271. These were all aged as spread mouth so younger than broken mouth cows. There was a lot of bred cows. Most of them went to the kill buyers. Anything 4 months bred or less went to the kill buyers. I was just one bid over kill. 5 black cows, one BWF, and one Hereford came into the ring together. My bet is that the Hereford will be bred to an Angus bull as she showed up with all black cows..
I can't get a picture of just the new arrivals. There was 9 head already in this pen from last week. Now there is 17 in there. Tomorrow morning they will get a brand. a couple shots, poured, and a new ear tag. Then out to the field they go.
The blacks in the first picture are new. So is the Hereford in the second picture.

Cow prices are dropping here quite a bit.
I got 2 pair for what I sold calves for a lil while back. And I could've bought more for not much more money!

Same with 2nd stage breds. Back a ways from pairs.

1425 pairs.
Lil over 1000 on decent breds

All young 4 and 5 yr olds

As soon as the cow numbers on the market get less the price is going to get lots higher

I am buying early this year because I believe come January bred cows will be too high to pencil out for a one and done program. Last year late winter early spring I was a hair under $1,200 a cow into buying them. This year I am a hair over $1,200 ($1,229 right now). Last year hay was real expensive. It cost $252 a head for the shorter time feeding costs. This year feed is much cheaper. My projected wintering cost is $352 a head. With the big calf checks people are getting I think that the big December stock cow sales will see the prices soar. People will have money to spend and need to spend to keep the government from taking too big of a piece of it. Also by buying early I will have calves born much earlier than last year resulting in bigger calves at sale time. Had one pair that went walk about this year. The neighbor caught the pair 6 weeks after the others were weaned. That calf turned out to be one of the two biggest steers. 6 weeks longer on the cow makes a difference. We are locked in to selling the cows when we do so the way to make calves older at weaning is to have them born earlier.
