Bit late but ive seen these things you hook up to the wire and it makes the solenoid buzz loudly. They are surprisingly loud.

Any piece of wire seems to work. I use a couple of welding rods. One thing. Over the years and lots of employees. Not everyone can do it.

Exactly, I was shown this by an old man 50 years ago. Since Ive shown lots of people, some have it some don't.

I usually put dowsing rods (wires) in a bottle, beer, "coke", DP, etc. Lets 'em spin freely

I have that already. It works for a little ways, until I have to round the corner of the garage.
Beyond that point, the pipes and wires must be buried deeper, or maybe it can't pick up thru caliche.
