Getting birth weight on new born calf

You can get a "game scale" very reasonable that should do the job. A couple of horse cinches make a good "harness". One right behind the front legs, one right in front of the hind legs, put all the rings over the hook on the game scale and lift.

    Quadruplets!

How cool that they all survived! The one with the Jersey foster dam must think it landed in heaven. I remember hearing about Tarentaise cows having live quads twice in about a 20 year period. Found one online, the other set was from the 90's and up in the Dakotas but I didn't remember...

Cattle taking care of their needs.

Ours have a 3 sided shed and they use it. Mostly to get out of a cold rain, but we've had cows go in there to calve, too.

    Importing Cattle

The US has a limited list of cattle breeds? Don't think so! Check this out, it starts with dairy breeds followed by beef. http://www.naab-css.org/guidelines/breed.html If you can't find something that suits your purpose in that list, I don't think it exists elsewhere in the world either.

    Working the Heifers

In spite of color differences, they look uniform to me for size and "type". Did the weights bear that out?

Some Photos of the Great White North

Enjoyed those, thanks! Beautiful sunrise shots. Gee you sure have a lot of "horizon" up there. lol Your selfie looked good, too, you have beautiful skin.

    Bez Caustic Dun

I was thinking that same thing! We take pride in being able to give our kids things we didn't have, or make life better for them than we had it. But what ends up happening, it makes every generation softer and more "spoiled". Also with all the divorces, I think guilt over the family...

    Frozen Hose

Ugh. We had to drain a hose all last winter when a hydrant failed. The forced air deal sounds smart but our air compressor lives a long way away from the water hose. The hose draining routine is easier with 2 people, if someone can shut off the water and unhook the hose, then the other person...

My little grey heifer found a new home and I kinda miss her

Aww, that was a great story. Good for you.

    Starting out with Dexters...

I'll put in another vote for a more "mainstream" cattle breed than the Dexters. If you want the convenience of selling at the local auction, you will not like what you get paid for them there. Also they carry some genetic defects so you have to give yourself a short course in genetics and do...

    Cattle Critique

Sorry but that bull calf is the worst specimen out of the ones pictured. No rump, fine boned, doesn't look masculine at all. He's got length and his hide would make a nice rug, that's what I can say nice about him. Get a better bull, or figure out how to AI your cows to a better bull. If...

    What happens on a feedlot?

That was great! Thanks for taking the time to put that together. Hope it gets shared far and wide, good information.

    Trouble makers

I have not been here as long as some, but there are some people here who seem to be mighty fine folks. Some are as even tempered as the day is long, others can get riled up but they don't seem to hold a grudge or stay on the fight for very long, then there are the ones who can't get enough...

    Twins!!?

They look great, the cow did a great job. It was a blessing this time instead of a curse.

    Ferguson Mo

I hoped that bringing in Capt. Ron Johnson would calm things down. He gave a very good impression, seems to be one of those natural born leaders that you just automatically have confidence in. But the agitators were hard at work, calling the release of the police report and photos about the...

    Fly rubs and weather exposure

When we first put up a rub, we put it across the entry to a pen where we fed them. But they gave it the stink eye and didn't come in for feed. We let one end down, when they were in the pen, put it back up. So they had to pass thru it to leave, and they soon did. Didn't take long until they...

    Howdy. Newbie here.

:welcome: You will find a wealth of experience and knowledge here, shared freely. However some don't sugar coat things at all, so don't be put off by that. Some people keep a family milk cow successfully as a solo animal, but I'm in the camp of having 2 because they are herd animals and...

Trying to figure out what to call the face markings

White face, black blaze, and is that a snip or a clip that goes down the side? Horse people help me out here, I always get those mixed up.
